In the 70’s Carter introduced a revolutionary new type of hydrant valve to remove much of the earlier complicated devices from the pit. The current 60554 was developed to be used with a pressure control coupler. This concept reduced the cost of hydrant systems by several magnitudes. Today there are only a few airports with the very obsolete hydrant valves with full pressure controls in the pits. As time goes by these are being phased out in favor of the less expensive to buy and to maintain units with the major controls on the coupler.

Now Carter introduces another concept that will reduce hydrant system maintenance costs even further. The relatively simple air pilot, standard on the 60554/61654 Hydrant Valves, will be replaced by a device with only a single moving piston and a quick disconnect device. The quick disconnect is similar to that now used on many hydrant valves to connect the air hose to the hydrant servicer. The entire hydrant mounted pilot valve and air hose quick disconnect is replaced with the two assemblies shown in the photos on the right. A similar actuator with manual override is also available as 64231.

Replaces current air operated pilot on 60554/61654 Hydrant Valves; Patent pending

Retrofitting Information

Existing 60554/61654 Air operated hydrant pit valves can be retrofitted as follows:
  1. Order one 47576 Valve Connector Assembly (for air/fuel operation) kit (shown to the right) for each hydrant valve,
  2. Order special tool T221790 (only a few per airport are needed) for use in installing assembly.
  3. Remove and discard the existing pilot valve and cage from the hydrant valve.
  4. Using the special tool screw the stem assembly into the hydrant valve body.
  5. Once the 47573 is seated and tightened install the 47574 Connector Assembly using the two bolts provided.
Retrofit the hydrant servicers by ordering one each 64230 or 64231 Actuator Assembly as appropriate to your operation for each servicer. Replace the existing disconnect on the hose to the hydrant valve with the 64230/64231 as appropriate. It is recommended that at least one spare 64230 or 64231 Actuator Assembly be ordered for each airport.
